Pityriasis Rosea
Pityriasis rosea is a benign, acute inflammatory skin condition. It typically begins with a single large lesion (the herald patch), followed by a crop of smaller papules that line up along the skin's tension lines. It is thought to be linked to reactivation of human herpesviruses 6 and 7 (HHV-6 and HHV-7). The rash usually lasts 6–8 weeks and often causes cosmetic concern because it can spread widely across the trunk.
At Haute-Derma, our goal is to support the body's natural recovery and protect the skin's even pigmentation.
How Pityriasis Rosea Is Diagnosed
Pityriasis rosea is diagnosed mainly from its typical clinical features, together with tests to rule out look-alike conditions:
- Identifying the herald patch: the largest red patch (2–10 cm), oval, with a fine rim of scale facing inward, usually appearing 1–2 weeks before the smaller papules.
- Looking for the "Christmas tree" pattern: small papules aligned along Langer's lines on the back and chest, forming the characteristic fir-tree arrangement.
- Dermoscopy: looking for a pale, salmon-colored background and a thin peripheral collarette of scale.
- Tests to rule out other causes: syphilis serology (RPR/VDRL) is essential, because secondary syphilis can look very similar to pityriasis rosea.
- Skin biopsy: recommended when the rash lasts more than 3 months or looks atypical, to rule out psoriasis or tinea corporis.
Treatment Options for Pityriasis Rosea at Haute-Derma
- Light therapy (NB-UVB phototherapy): narrowband UVB started early (in the first week of the flare) can noticeably reduce severity and shorten how long the papules last.
- Topical corticosteroids: medium-strength anti-inflammatory creams to calm redness and itching during the acute phase.
- Antihistamines: help control itching, especially at night, so patients can sleep well.
- Antiviral therapy: for severe flares or when there are systemic symptoms, the doctor may consider high-dose acyclovir to suppress viral replication and shorten the illness.
- Moisturizing and soothing care: barrier-repair products to prevent dryness and irritation from clothing friction.
