Intense Pulsed Light

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is not a laser. Instead of a single wavelength, it emits polychromatic, non-coherent, non-collimated broadband light spanning roughly 400 nm to 1200 nm. The key to IPL is that this spectrum can be tailored with cut-off filters, allowing the operator to select for different chromophores in the skin, such as melanin, hemoglobin or the bacterium Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes).

At Haute-Derma, IPL is one of our versatile core treatments because it can address several cosmetic concerns in the same area at once: clearing small dilated blood vessels, fading superficial pigment, removing hair, controlling acute inflammatory acne and providing overall photorejuvenation.

How IPL Works: Light Biology and Cut-Off Filters

Whereas a laser delivers a focused beam at a single wavelength, IPL works by flexibly shaping a broad band of polychromatic energy:

  • Selective Photothermolysis: IPL pulses pass through the epidermis and are preferentially absorbed by the target chromophores. The light is converted into heat on the spot, raising the target to a temperature that causes biological damage (60–70°C) so it is destroyed while the surrounding tissue stays as safe as possible.
  • The Role of Cut-Off Filters: Dedicated filters block every wavelength below the cut-off value and let only the longer wavelengths through.
    • Example: a 560 nm filter removes all light from 400–559 nm, so only wavelengths from 560–1200 nm penetrate into the dermis to act on melanin and hemoglobin.
  • Adjustable Pulse Structure: Modern IPL platforms (such as Optima IPL, OPT and AOPT) use square-pulse technology, which keeps the energy density constant for the whole pulse duration. This avoids sharp energy spikes that can burn the skin and limits the drop-off in energy at the tail of the pulse.

IPL Filter Ranges and Clinical Indications

Filter Range (Cut-Off)Main Target (Chromophore)Preferred Clinical Uses at Haute-Derma
400–420 nm (Acne Filter)Porphyrins (metabolic products of C. acnes)Kills C. acnes and reduces acute inflammatory acne flares
515–560 nm (Vascular / Pigment)Superficial melanin and oxyhemoglobinFreckles, sun spots, fine telangiectasia, post-acne redness (PIE)
590–615 nm (Deep Vascular / Rejuvenation)Deoxyhemoglobin and deeper melaninLarger vascular lesions, rosacea, skin rejuvenation
640–695 nm (Hair Removal / Collagen)Follicular papilla melanin and tissue waterHair removal over large areas (fine or coarse hair); stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen

Treatment Protocol and Parameter Settings at Haute-Derma

  • Skin Preparation and Protective Cooling
    • The skin is cleansed and a 1–2 mm layer of clear, chilled coupling gel is applied to carry the light into the skin and cool the outer epidermis.
    • We check that the sapphire contact-cooling tip stays at 0–4°C to protect the epidermis from thermal burns.
  • Choosing Pulse Settings and Fluence
    • Pulse width: set according to the size of the target. Small targets such as fine capillaries need short pulses; larger targets need longer ones.
    • Delay time: the pause between sub-pulses lets the surrounding healthy tissue shed its heat fully, which keeps discomfort to a minimum.
  • Combined Rejuvenation and Recovery Protocols
    • IPL photorejuvenation can be followed immediately by iontophoresis of exosomes or pure hyaluronic acid to calm the skin faster, restore hydration and enhance radiance.
